How To Be Free Of Dieting

By Tarryn Thompson | In Health & Nutrition | on November 14, 2016

An important part of a healthy body is having a healthy mind and I want you to be free of the diet mentality.

A diet mentality says that you must do everything right 100% of the time.

I use a 2 principle approach with my clients and just yesterday I asked one of them which of the 2 principles she was going to follow in the week ahead. She said “I’m going to try to follow it 100%”.

Let me be very clear, there is no ‘100% of the time’ in a healthy lifestyle. It’s not necessary and it sets you up for disappointment.

At the beginning of my clients sessions, I always ask them, “What did you do well this week?”

Usually the first thing I hear is “I could have done better” or “It was a terrible week” or “I can’t think of anything I’ve done well”.

This type of thinking is the result of trying to do everything perfect.

I then begin listing off the 10 health habits I teach them and I see they’ve done very well with eating every 2-3 hours, most of the time.

They’ve done well a eating within an hour of waking up – most of the time. They’ve kept their GL load under 10, most of the time. And they’ve increased their exercise in some way.

Over time they start to shift their mindset and begin focusing on what they’ve done well. Before long they begin telling me all the things they’ve done well before I even get a chance to ask.

My job, when working with my clients is ‘help them focus on the 80%’ and thats what I want to help you with too.

So the first step to Being Free Of Dieting is to develop a health habit mindset. There are 10 health habits you must develop to create a healthy lifestyle.

They’re so important I wrote a whole book about them which you can download here as a free gift.

The second step is to adopt the 80/20 or 90/10 principle.

The 80/20 principle says – It’s ok to have 80% of your meals and snacks go according to plan and 20% not.

The 90/10 principle says – Its ok to have 90% of your meals and snacks go according to plan and 10% not.

When deciding which principle to follow, base your decision on where you are at with your goals, and what kind of a week you have ahead.

This week, one of my clients had a girls weekend planned, and then a 50th birthday during the week. So she chose the 80/20 principle.

I want you to be free of the diet mentality so let me spell out for you the exact guidelines for following each principle so you know your boundaries.

The 80/20 Principle

Let’s say you have 3 meals and 2 snacks in your day. That’s 21 meals and 14 snacks in the week.

80% of 21 meals is 17 meals

80% of 14 snacks is 11 snacks

This means 4 meals and 3 snacks can be outside of your plan. But remember this isn’t giving you licence to drop your guard completely.

1 of those meals might include a glass of wine, 1 might include a small desert. 1 may also be if you over ate or had too much protein or carbohydrate with a meal. It could be having extra fats with a meal.

The point is, when you look over the week you will be able to see, that 80% of the time – most of the time you followed healthy habits.

Provided you have followed this principle you can expect anywhere from a 300g – 500gm loss per week.

The 90/10 Principle

If you decide to follow a 90/10 principle you will half as many meals and snacks to play with. Meaning 2 meals in the week can go outside the plan and 1 snack.

If you follow the 90/10 principle you can expect a 600-900gm loss.

At the beginning of each week, determine what you have coming up and decide which principle you will follow.

If stress is high, there are deadlines that need to be met, or the kids are sick then it’s not wise to choose a 90/10 week.

I trust you got value from this article and it that it changed your perspective on how to create a healthy lifestyle and be free of dieting. I go into much more detail inmy book – How To Lose Weight The Healthy Way. Grab your copy here and let me know what you think.
