5 Foods To Detox From & Why

By Tarryn Thompson | In Health & Nutrition | on December 28, 2016

2017 is fast approaching and I wanted to make sure you kicked off the new year with a supercharged metabolism.

By detoxing from these foods you will help your body let go of extra fluid, reduce bloating, improve your digestive system and jumpstart your goals for 2017.

So here we go:

The 5 Top Food To Detox From & Why

Gluten

This is one of the biggest culprits for bloating and inflammation mainly found in bread, pastas and cereals. Its extremely difficult for the body to digest and should be avoided even if you don’t have a specific allergy to it. It’s actually not as hard as you think to avoid. Just replace it with lots of low-calorie nutrient dense vegetables.

Soy Products

I’m referring to the unfermented kind. The compounds found in unfermented soy products can trigger your body to produce the hormone estrogen. The problem with excessive estrogen is it can your body to store fat if not properly eliminated from the body.

Dairy Products

There are 2 primary challenges with dairy products. 1). Their lactose content, which is a sugar and can cause bloating and gas, and 2). Some people have a allergy to milk protein. This can cause mucus buildup and inflammation in the body.

Refined or Added Sugar

This is any sugar that’s not naturally occurring in the food. These types of sugars spike your blood sugar, which triggers fat storage and water retention. If you’re looking for a guide, aim to keep your total added sugar intake under 16 grams per day. The most common way to receive added sugars is through fizzy drinks and fruit juices. Basically any store bought cold drink that is not water is going to contain more than 16 grams of sugar in one serving. I recommend drinking just water and lemon especially first thing in the morning.

Sugar-Free Sweeteners

The most common sugar-free sweeteners are: aspartame, saccharine, sorbitol, and sucralose. These are “fake” sugars that your body can’t digest. Since it can’t be digested, the result is gas and bloating. There is a natural and healthy sweetener on the market called stevia, which can be digested by your body.

So there you have it, my top 5 foods to detox from and why. The question remains, “how long must I detox from these foods?” Well heres what I do:

Gluten and sugar free sweeteners are out for good. They may sneak in unknowingly but in most cases they’re gone.

Soy and dairy I have occasionally and when I do in very small quantities.

And added sugar I keep to a minimum.

If you’re experiencing low energy, bloating and problems with your digestion, try eliminating these foods for 5 – 10 days and see how you feel.
