Hey Tarryn Thompson here. If you’re in the habit of mindlessly snacking then this is especially for you.
In fact you may be able to relate to this scenario:
You’re super excited to start moving towards the body you want, towards having boundless energy and your motivation is high to get out of your painful situation.
Everything is planned out, your cupboard and fridge are ready.
But 2 or 3 days into it you’re craving something. Or you see someone eating something that you have been resisting for 2 or 3 days and so you stop by the supermarket on the way home telling yourself you’ll only have a little bit only to find yourself eating more and more until you’re feeling guilty or you’re stuffed.
If you can relate the the above scenario then this article is definitely for you so read on.
I’m going to give you 2 philosophy’s you must adopt in order to really succeed with your health goals.
Here is the first.
You must end your all or nothing attitude.
I have heard like a running record, “look Tarryn I am a person who is all in or out. It’s everything or nothing.” And although that might sound good in theory, this was said by no successful person, in any area, ever.
You see successful people understand that all or nothing equals unmet expectations and disappointments.
If you continue with this all or nothing attitude then you will give food so much power over you. You might not feel deprived initially but as you continue to avoid, the desire to eat the foods you are avoiding will increase until eventually you give in.
It’s like trying to hold onto your pee, if you hold on long enough eventually you will wet yourself.
Until you address your mindset then you will stay in the world of a dieter and continue to get the up and down results of a dieter.
If you do decide to change your mindset, then you will take food down off the pedestal because you are not giving it any more power than it needs.
You will find that you can enjoy the things you like as people with healthy lifestyles do, because you know that food is not going away. And that sainthood is not a requirement to be healthy or to enjoy the fruits of a slim body.
Here is the second philosophy.
Schedule your snacks and create a boundary beforehand.
Give yourself the ok to eat the foods you enjoy. The key is to be controlled of your portions beforehand.
Look there is a reason why we don’t allow our kids to eat from the bag or the container. Would you ever hand your child a whole packet of biscuits and expect them to have 1 or 2? No, you would hand your child one or two, clarify that it is enough, and put the packet away.
This is a strategy and strategies are crucial to your success.
If you do not schedule your snacks, both the treats and the healthy ones. You will daydream about them. Your brain will paint that picture of the muffin or ice cream in such bright colours. You will taste the treat and imagine what it is like to eat it so vividly that you’ll find yourself driving to the gas station wondering how you got there.
You will find yourself in awkward conversations trying to explain to your friends and family that this is the new healthy you.
If you schedule your snacks you can plan ahead. Maybe during the week you’re going out and want to enjoy a wine or two with the girls.
Or that date night is this Saturday and you know hubby is taking you to your fave restaurant.
Or simply that every Friday is the workplace shout and you would like to join in on the festivities. Whatever it is, schedule your snacks and create your boundaries.
Trust me if this consists of 10-20% of your calories and the other 80-90% of your food choices are coming from whole foods high in nutrients. Then this is what will lead to lifetime habits and results rather than a Mon – Fri diet thats 100% whole foods but only lasts the week.
Adopt these 2 philosophies. Give yourself permission to have the foods you enjoy. Eat them mindfully and in control.
