Ever wondered what the best spices are to use and what they’re good for? Check out my list of favourites and their powerful health properties. I encourage you to make them your new best friend and reap all the health benefits.
Cinnamon – helps your body process carbs more efficiently and helps regulate blood sugar levels. I love it in smoothies and in my homemade Power Bars.
Cayenne Pepper – not only does cayenne boost your metabolism, it also contains antioxidant properties and acts as a stimulant for the whole body. I sprinkle this on my scrambled eggs every morning.
Tumeric – acts as a liver detoxifier and anti-inflammatory. Great to add colour to any rice dish. Just don’t get it on your new white shirt!
Garlic – great sources of calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, selenium, folate, magnesium, vitamins B1, B2, B3 and vitamin C. Fresh is always best. Especially in homemade hummus.
Cardamon – boosts your metabolism and helps to burn fat. It also helps treat digestive and lung disorders, oral infections and upset stomachs. Be careful not to overdo it, it has a very strong flavour. I love it combined with cinnamon in my Quinoa & Oat cereal.
Ginger – acts as a thermogenic and aids in fat burning. Also may help lower cholesterol and contains many antioxidants.
Cumin seeds (or ground) – rich in Iron, and stimulates the metabolism by turning the body’s internal heat and helping ignite your metabolism. It’s just the best all round spice and goes great on roast chicken.
Black Pepper – the active chemical in black pepper is ‘piperine’, this triggers parts of the brain and the nervous system, which in turn, boots your metabolism and burns more calories.
So there you have it. I’ve got 9 on my list; does anyone have a 10th to add?
